The Monastery's Church

On the way back to the Citadel's Square, not far from the Tower with the Clock we meet the Monastery's Church. The Church appears for the first time in a letter. In 1301 Bonifaciu emits "Ausculta fili" which accentuates the papal authority, considered the first of all worldly authorities. The same pope emits in 1302 "Unam sanctum" considered the most exaggerated wording of the pope's pretensions, letter which has been written by 10 bishops from Rome, and approved by the Transylvanian bishop. In this document was mentioned for the first time the Monastery's Church, under the name: "church of the preacher brothers".

The church has been errected by the Dominicans. Dominicans were recognized by pope Honorius of the 3rd in the year of 1216. The Dominican monks were considered beggars.

They gave up on the stabile income and they have chooses to live from beggary. Contrary to their concepts they have increased their wealth. A document written by pope Gregor the 11th granted freedom and rights, consisted of the right of listen confessions and mass.

After the emission of this document becomes more and more visible the opposition between the monks and the priestof the town. In the year of 1455 the conflict situation has become serious, because after the death of Michael from Sighisoara, the monastery obtained from the King Laszlo of Hungary the right to to inherit his house. The inheritance was considered illegal, because the goods of the Saxons after death belonged to the community not to the king.

Nikolaus from Salzburg left in his will that after his death, the Church of the Monastery should get half of Albesti, with the half of it's mill near the Tarnava Mare river, and a third part of his pasture land. Nikolaus from Bethlen has donated himself in 1499 3 estates and 3 ponds in Hetiur. Contrary to the growth of their fortune, the monks together with the monks from Odorhei and Sibiu held the monopoly of beggary in the region.

The building of the Monastery was in the northeastern part of the church and it had a length of 120m. Only the roof were burned by the fire in 1676. The walls remained untouched by the fire, and it made possible a description of the interior of the monastery. The church had 19 cells and the access into them were by a large hall. On the top of the doors were round holes, and on the walls of the cells were paintings and quotations.

In 1508 the monastery has been rebuilt, and between 1555-1575 the town hall was moved out from the Tower with the Clock to the ground floor of the monastery. In this part too was the "refectoriu". A deep well was in the southeastern part of the yard and the entrance in the building was through a giant gate. The whole monastery was surrounded by a defending wall.

It seems like the church of the monastery was errected between 1492-1495 under the dominan monks order. Lucas Josef Marienburg sustains that the church was built between 1482-1515. Contrary to his idea Friedrich Muller says that the year of beginning of the construction is 1492, although on the west wall of the storehouse a gothic inscription mentions the year 1483. F. Muller is based on the fact that Sighisoara did not have at that time sufficient economic power to sustain the construction process of two churches, the one on the hill and the monastery's either. The inscription from 1804 proves that the time of beginning is 1492.

This construction resulted in a gothic church with 3 halls with 2 pairs of poles. The monastery has been demolished in 1886. Between 1866 and 1888 on the place of the old Dominican monastery was errected the town hall. A passage linked the church to the monastery. The church became the most important church of the evangelic population. The church from the hill was in the second plan until the 18th century. In this church is kept the altar which was kept in the "Church of the Hill" and it's from 1521.

In April the 30th 1676 the church has burned entirely, so all of the furniture dates after the event. The church has been repaired by the financial help of the citizens who offered priority to the church and the Tower with the Clock.

In the church of the monastery was one of the few Transylvanian early baroque styled altars with elements belonging to the late Renaissance. The altar was made by Jeremia Stavronius Slovakian painter and Johannes West Slovakian sculptor. On the altar we can find the most representative moments of the salvation of mankind.

The tower and the bell were built in 1677.

The organ was built in 1680 in baroque style by the mentioned experts. Under the tubes of the organ is an inscription: "This work has been done for the glory of God in AD 1680". In 1889 the organ was moved from the northern part of the church to the western were is situated in the present. The organ is used even today in many concerts organized in the church.

In 1905 a new organ was built in 1905 by a German company, which is complex and highly gifted.

Improvement have been made in 1805 and 1859. In 1890 some auxiliary buildings were demolished. Because of damage in 1929 a part of the hall which linked the monastery and some of the balconies inside the church. By the time of the demolition of the balconies a gothic element on which today is a monument in the memory of the victims of the first world war. The inside walls of the church has been repainted, the seats and the floor rebuild. In the same year was resolved the heating issue. In 1955 next to the firs monument an other one was mounted in memorial of the Saxons died in the Second World War.

In the year of 1929 graves were found in the church, containing human schelet-parts and cloths.
By this restorations the church has obtained its final form, as you can see today.

The last modification took place in 1982 when the restorations was done in a short period, in only 3 months 3 new fireplaces were built. The patrimony of the Church contains 39 Turkish carpets with different models, gained from donations from merchants.
